Mother-of-four Helen Jesson has progressed from ‘couch’ to running track after physiotherapy with Ben Ratcliffe at our Crewe clinic.
Back in April 2017, Helen suffered a serious knee injury on a skiing holiday and so began months of intensive physiotherapy combined with two operations.
Now out of her leg brace, she is hard in training for the UK Triathlon event taking place in Nantwich on May 12 – an incredible feat she is undertaking to raise money for the Mid Cheshire Hospitals Trust.
She said: “My family and friends, not to mention my surgeon and Ben think I am completely mad entering the triathlon as I have never run before and have less than three months to prepare.
“I may be over 50 but I consider myself far too young to give up doing all the activities I enjoy. I take my children on activity holidays and I want to continue to participate with them not be a spectator.”
Plucky Helen is fundraising for the hospital as a way of giving back. She’s following the ‘coach to 5k’ app and her training regime includes a gruelling schedule of running, swimming and cycling.
She added: “I don’t expect to win, my aim is just to get through it and still be standing!”
Ben, a dedicated 800m athlete himself, has experience in multiple areas of physiotherapy including musculoskeletal outpatients, orthopaedics, stroke rehabilitation, intensive care and cardiac rehabilitation.
He paid tribute to Helen saying: “Often patients are so elated to have recovered from serious injury they take up a new physical activity. Helen is taking this to a new level. Her effort for the hospital shows tremendous determination and generosity of spirit. We’re backing her all the way!”
